Firearms and Concealed Weapon Permits

Pistol Purchase Permits
To purchase a handgun in Michigan, an individual must have a valid Concealed Pistol License (CPL), or complete a background check with a law enforcement agency to obtain a License to Purchase (LTP). Additionally, purchasers must:
  • Be at least 21 years old to purchase from an Federally Licensed Dealer, or at least 18 to purchase from a private party
  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident with a valid Michigan driver license or ID card
  • Be free of disqualifying felony or domestic violence convictions
  • Be free of mental illnesses, judgements of insanity, and involuntary commitments to mental health facilities
  • Have no history of felony convictions or Personal Protection Orders against them
Licenses to Purchase are available by appointment only. Please contact Deputy Mike Kass to schedule an appointment to completed your Handgun Purchase Permit Application and background check. Once issued, a License to Purchase is valid for 30 days.

After purchasing your handgun, the purchase permit and Pistol Sales Record forms must be returned to the Sheriff's Office within 10 days. Unused purchase permits must be returned to the Sheriff's Office to be cancelled.

Firearm Registration for Newly-Purchased Pistols
An RI-60 Firearm Sales Record should be completed by the seller, and signed by the purchaser. A copy of the completed form must be submitted to the Sheriff's Office within 10 days of purchase. 


Firearm Transfers
Handguns obtained or inherited from the estate of a deceased individual must be transferred to your name. To re-register the weapon, the new owner will need to provide the firearm make, model, and serial number, as well as a copy of the prior owner's death certificate.



Concealed Pistol Licenses
To obtain a new Concealed Pistol License (CPL):
  1. Complete an authorized Pistol Safety Training Course and receive a certificate of completion.
  2. Schedule an appointment for a LiveScan fingerprint background check at the Sheriff's Office by calling 906-863-4441 x2503. Fingerprinting is offered BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Same-day appointments may not be available.
  3. Complete your CPL application form, and pay the $115 application fee to the County Clerk's office in the Menominee County Courthouse. Note: Your application must be signed in the presence of a Deputy Clerk. DO NOT sign your application until instructed to do so at the County Clerk's Office. Retain all provided receipts until your fingerprinting appointment.
  4. Bring the receipt of application to the Sheriff’s Office to get fingerprinted. Fingerprints are completed electronically and submitted for the background check.
  5. The State of Michigan CPL Firearms Unit will notify the County Clerk's Office of your CPL qualification status. If you qualify, the County Clerk will issue your CPL license and mail it to your home. This process may take up to 45 days.
  6. Individuals who do not qualify will receive notice via mail.


CPL Renewals
CPL holders will receive a renewal notice in the mail 3-6 months prior to their license expiration. To renew a CPL license, an indivdual must submit the CPL Renewal Application online, in person, or via mail. A $115 renewal fee must be paid at application submission. Renewal applicants are NOT required to have fingerprints taken again.
