Job Summary
The Seasonal Buildings & Grounds Custodian (West Shore Fishing Museum) is an essential team member of the Menominee County Parks System. Each year, the West Shore Fishing Museum welcomes hundreds of guests interested in learning about Menominee County’s commercial fishing history.
The Seasonal Buildings & Grounds Custodian (West Shore Fishing Museum) supports the daily operations of maintaining the West Shore Fishing Museum by performing a variety of outdoor, building, and equipment maintenance and custodial tasks.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position. Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully to be qualified for the position. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Perform routine grounds maintenance including mowing, trimming, edging, pruning, and brush removal.
- Maintain facilities such as buildings, exhibits, restrooms, picnic areas, beach, and trails.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, pavilions, and other public-use areas.
- Collect and dispose of trash and recyclables throughout park grounds.
- Assist with landscaping tasks including planting, watering, mulching, and weed control.
- Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, and light-duty vehicles safely and effectively.
- Inspect facilities and grounds for safety hazards and report needed repairs or unsafe conditions.
- Perform minor building repairs such as painting, basic carpentry, plumbing fixes, and equipment adjustments.
- Assist with setup and takedown of equipment for park events and recreational programs.
- Maintain trails, signage, fencing, and other park infrastructure.
- Conduct basic maintenance on equipment including cleaning, fueling, and routine checks.
- Provide courteous assistance to park visitors and respond to general inquiries.
- Assist in the enforcement of the Menominee County Parks Use Ordinance.
- Follow safety procedures and use personal protective equipment as required.
- Work independently or as part of a team under the direction of supervisory staff.
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
In order to perform the functions and responsibilities of the position the following knowledge, skills, and abilities are essential.
Minimum Knowledge
- Basic knowledge of groundskeeping and landscaping practices, including mowing, trimming, pruning, and weed control.
- Basic knowledge of custodial cleaning methods, materials, and sanitation standards.
- Basic understanding of hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, and light-duty vehicle operation.
- General knowledge of minor building maintenance and repair techniques (painting, basic carpentry, simple plumbing repairs).
- Awareness of workplace safety practices, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Basic understanding of safe chemical handling for cleaning agents and landscaping materials.
- General knowledge of public park operations and visitor service principles.
- Familiarity with enforcing rules and regulations in a public setting.
- Skill in operating lawn mowers, trimmers, blowers, and other grounds maintenance equipment safely and efficiently.
- Skill in using common hand and power tools.
- Skill in performing routine cleaning and sanitizing tasks effectively.
- Basic repair and maintenance skills for facilities, equipment, and park infrastructure.
- Ability to identify maintenance issues and potential safety hazards.
- Good communication and customer service skills when interacting with park visitors and staff.
- Time management skills to complete assigned duties efficiently.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
- Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions (heat, humidity, rain, cold).
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment (typically up to 50 pounds or more).
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and perform repetitive motions for extended periods.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team.
- Ability to exercise good judgment in recognizing safety hazards and responding appropriately.
- Ability to interact courteously and professionally with the public.
- Ability to understand and assist in enforcing park rules and regulations.
- Ability to maintain regular attendance and work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays if required.
