Job Summary
The Road Patrol Deputy performs law enforcement and public safety duties to protect life and property and enforce federal, state, and local laws within Menominee County. Some of the key responsibilities of the Road Patrol Deputy include patrol & enforcement, emergency response, conducting investigations, preparing reports & testifying in court, and building relationships within the community.
Special assignment opportunities for Road Patrol Deputies include: K9 Handler, School Resource Officer, Field Training Officer, Drone Unit, ORV/ATV Patrol Unit, Snowmobile Patrol Unit, Marine Patrol Unit, Firearms Instructor, and Defensive Tactics Instructor.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position. Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully to be qualified for the position. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Law Enforcement and Public Safety
- Enforce federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and traffic regulations.
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, including accidents, disturbances, and criminal incidents.
- Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations of criminal activity, traffic accidents, and suspicious incidents.
- Arrest and detain individuals suspected of violating laws, ensuring proper procedures are followed.
- Prepare and serve warrants, subpoenas, and other legal documents as authorized.
Patrol Duties
- Patrol assigned areas to prevent and detect criminal activity and maintain public safety.
- Monitor and inspect public areas, commercial properties, and roadways for compliance and safety hazards.
- Provide assistance and guidance to motorists and citizens in routine and emergency situations.
- Respond to calls for service promptly and provide professional public contact.
Traffic Enforcement and Accident Investigation
- Conduct traffic stops and issue citations or warnings as appropriate.
- Investigate traffic accidents, document findings, and complete detailed reports.
- Enforce OWI, speed, and other traffic safety regulations.
- Direct traffic and provide support during emergencies, special events, or road closures.
Reporting and Documentation
- Prepare detailed incident, arrest, and investigative reports accurately and in a timely manner.
- Document evidence collection and maintain chain of custody for legal proceedings.
- Testify in court and provide accurate, professional testimony when required.
- Maintain logs, citations, and other official records in accordance with departmental policy.
Community Relations
- Promote positive relationships with community members through public education, outreach, and engagement programs.
- Assist victims and witnesses of crimes with resources and information.
- Participate in community policing initiatives to improve safety and trust within the community.
Coordination and Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with other law enforcement agencies, emergency services, and court personnel.
- Assist with search and rescue operations, civil disturbances, and disaster response as needed.
- Provide support and coordination during joint operations, special investigations, or emergency events.
Equipment and Safety
- Operate law enforcement vehicles, firearms, and other equipment safely and effectively.
- Maintain department-issued equipment, uniforms, and vehicles in proper working order.
- Follow all safety procedures and policies to protect self, fellow deputies, and the public.
Additional Duties
- Attend mandatory training, briefings, and continuing education to maintain professional certifications.
- Serve as backup and provide coverage for other deputies when required.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors to support the mission of the Menominee County Sheriff’s Office.
Minimum Education & Qualifications General:
- Required to be a United States citizen.
- Required to be at least 18 years old.
- Required to pass a background investigation.
- No felony convictions, including expunged convictions.
- Required to pass a psychological investigation.
- Required to pass a physical examination & fitness test.
Education:
- Highschool diploma or equivalent.
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:
- Certified by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES); or eligible to be certified by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) at the time of hire.
- Valid driver’s license with good driving history.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
In order to perform the functions and responsibilities of the position (listed above) the following knowledge, skills, and abilities are essential.
Knowledge
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and court procedures relevant to law enforcement.
- Knowledge of patrol procedures, criminal investigation techniques, and crime prevention strategies.
- Knowledge of traffic enforcement, accident investigation, and OWI detection procedures.
- Knowledge of law enforcement reporting, documentation, and record-keeping requirements.
- Knowledge of firearms, defensive tactics, emergency response procedures, and proper use of law enforcement equipment.
- Knowledge of community policing principles, public relations practices, and cultural sensitivity in public interactions.
- Knowledge of applicable safety standards, departmental policies, and chain-of-command procedures.
- Skill in operating law enforcement vehicles, emergency equipment, and communication devices.
- Skill in effectively observing, documenting, and reporting criminal and traffic incidents.
- Skill in interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects to obtain accurate information.
- Skill in handling stressful and potentially dangerous situations calmly and decisively.
- Skill in using conflict resolution, de-escalation techniques, and crisis intervention strategies.
- Skill in collaborating with other law enforcement agencies, emergency personnel, and community partners.
- Skill in preparing clear, concise, and accurate reports and court documentation.
- Ability to enforce laws impartially, with integrity and professionalism.
- Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to emergency situations and prioritize tasks under pressure.
- Ability to maintain physical fitness and perform physically demanding duties, including foot pursuits, arrests, and emergency response.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion when making decisions that affect public safety.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive or confidential information responsibly.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with the public, colleagues, and judicial personnel.

- Ability to testify in court and provide accurate and professional testimony when required.
- Ability to provide leadership, guidance, or coverage for other deputies when necessary.
Physical Requirements
- Stand, walk, and run for extended periods during patrols, emergency response, or foot pursuits.
- Lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds, including equipment, evidence, and detained individuals.
- Climb, balance, and navigate obstacles in a variety of environments, including uneven terrain, stairs, and vehicles.
- Bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach to investigate scenes, handle equipment, or assist the public.
- Operate law enforcement vehicles, emergency equipment, and communications devices safely under normal and emergency conditions.
- Use firearms and defensive tools with accuracy, strength, and precision.
- Perform emergency rescue operations, including assisting injured or incapacitated persons, as needed.
- Maintain sufficient agility, coordination, and stamina to respond effectively in high-stress, rapidly changing situations.
- See, hear, and communicate effectively to detect hazards, interpret situations, and interact with the public, colleagues, and courts.
- Work in a variety of environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, inclement weather, confined spaces, and hazardous situations.
