A hazardous material (HAZMAT) is any substance or agent that, due to its chemical, physical, or biological nature, can pose an unreasonable risk to health, safety, or property if not handled, stored, transported, or disposed of correctly.  These materials can be toxic, flammable, corrosive, reactive, radioactive, or otherwise threatening.  Regulations from government agencies such as MIDOT, MIOSHA, and EGLE within the state of Michigan define these materials, and set guidelines for their safe management to prevent accidents, injuries, and enviromental damage.
