PURCHASE PERMITS

  • If you are buying a pistol from a Federally Licensed Retail Firearm Dealer, you may go directly to the store to purchase it. You do not need to get a Purchase Permit from the Sheriff’s Office. If you are buying a pistol from a private individual, you must first come into the Sheriff’s Office and obtain a Purchase Permit.

  • You will have to show a valid picture I.D.

  • You will be required to fill out a Handgun Purchase Permit Application.

  • A background check will be conducted to verify that you meet all the qualifications.

  • Once you have been approved, you will be issued a Purchase Permit. You will have thirty (30) days from that date to obtain your handgun. You will then have ten (10) days from the date you purchased your handgun to register it. If you do not use the Purchase Permit, you must return it to the Sheriff’s Office, so we can cancel it.
HANDGUN REGISTRATION PROCESS – HANDGUN PURCHASED WITH PURCHASE PERMIT

After purchasing your handgun, you must return the Permit to Purchase to the Sheriff’s Office within 10 days of purchase.
You may register your handgun in several ways.

  • Hand carry the “Agency Copy” and “MSP Copy” to the Sheriff’s Office. You may do this at any time, as you no longer have to bring the handgun in to be inspected. The Sheriff’s Office is open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

  • Within 10 days of purchase, you may mail the Agency Copy or MSP Copy of the Purchase Permit to us by the US Postal Service mail. Our address is Menominee County Sheriff’ 831 10th Ave Menominee MI 49858.

  • You must possess the “Purchaser’s Copy” of the Permit to Purchase for 30 days after purchase. It is recommended that you make a photocopy of the Purchaser’s Copy and retain it with the handgun for at least 6 months.
HANDGUNS PURCHASED WITH CONCEALED PISTOL LICENSE (CPL)

Individuals who have been issued a valid Concealed Pistol License (CPL) do not have to obtain a Purchase Permit before purchasing a handgun. They are required to use a “RI-60 Pistol Sale Record” to record the handgun purchase. The “RI-60 Pistol Sale Record” may be obtained from the Menominee County Sheriff’s Office and many firearms dealers.

After purchasing your handgun, you must submit the completed “RI-60 Pistol Sale Record” to the Sheriff’s Office within 10 days of purchase. If you fail to return the “RI-60 Pistol Sale Record” within 10 days of purchase.
