Description

of the duties of this office

  • Assist homeowners and contractors in applying for permits

  • Review drawings to ensure code compliance before construction begins / make corrections

  • Issue permits after drawings are approved and fee is payed

  • Perform on-site inspections to ensure compliance with approved drawings and building codes

  • Issue notices for violations of building codes

  • Issue Certificate of Use Occupancy for completed projects

    BUILDING PERMITS ARE REQUIRED FOR THE FOLLOWING

  • Construction other than detached accessory structure under 200 sq. ft.(residential) or 120sq. ft. (non-residential)

  • Additions (including decks)

  • Alterations or remodeling that include cutting away any wall or portion of a wall

  • Install or replace any manufactured home

  • Moved structures

  • Demolition of a structure

  • Fences 6' or higher, Retaining walls 4' or higher, Pools 2' or more deep, Signs/Marquee

  • Change in Use and Occupancy of a structure

  • Temporary structures more than 120 sq. ft. including tents and stages (non-residential)

    Permits are not required for siding, maintenance, minor repairs or finish work

    REQUIREMENTS FOR OBTAINING A BUILDING PERMIT

    Residential Dwellings up to 3500 sq. ft., Residential Accessory Structure up to 3000 sq. ft., Additions/Alterations

  • Completed application and required fee

  • Site plan showing proposed construction, property lines, roads, structures & dimensions

  • Drawings of proposed construction showing all structural and code requirements

    Non-Residential Projects, Residential Dwellings over 3500 sq. ft., Residential Accessory Structure over 3000 sq. ft.

  • Completed application and required fee

  • Site plan showing prposed construction, property lines, roads, structures & dimensions

  • Drawings of proposed construction prepared by a Registered Design Professional

    DRAWINGS MUST BE REVEIWED BEFORE A PERMIT IS ISSUED AND MAY BE:


  • APPROVED

  • APPROVED WITH MINOR CORRECTIONS MADE

  • RETURNED FOR MORE DETAIL

  • REJECTED AND DESIGN DRAWINGS REQUIRED

  • Zoning-Cedarville, Harris, Ingallston, Lake, Mellen, Stephenson Twps. Powers, Village of

  • Sanitary Permit for new homes, camps and bedroom additions

  • Soil Erosion Sedimentation Control Permit for an earth change over one acre or within 500' of water

  • Driveway permit from Menominee County Road Commission(work within county easement)

  • Floodplain, wetlands or other permits issued by MDNRE

  • Electrical, Plumbing or Mechanical permits issued by State of Michigan

    INSPECTIONS THAT MAY BE REQUIRED

  • FOOTING -When forms and reinforcement are in place -Prior to placing concrete

  • FOUNDATION -Damp proofing, drainage system and floor deck in place - Prior to backfill

  • ROUGH -All framing, bracing, fire stopping and electrical, plumbing, mechanical rough inspections are done - Prior to insulating(truss drawings must be on site)

  • INSULATION-When requirments of M.U.E.C. are meet - Prior to covering insulation

  • FINAL -On completion of project - Prior to occupancy, at this time a Certificate of Occupancy may be issued (elec., plumb., mech. final inspections required)

  • SPECIAL INSPECTIONS- As required (demolition permits require two inspections)

    PERMITS EXPIRE IN 180 DAYS IF WORK HAS NOT STARTED OR NO INSPECTIONS ARE CALLED FOR - AN EXTENSION MAY BE REQUESTED IN WRITING
