NEW DEADLINE - PROPERTY TAX FORECLOSURE

GOVERNOR SIGNS EXECUTIVE ORDER EXTENDING MICHIGAN’S TAX FORECLOSURE DEADLINE

On March 18, 2020, Michigan Governor, Gretchen Whitmer, signed an Executive Order taking emergency action to extend Michigan’s property tax foreclosure deadline, due to the COVID-19 national emergency. Under Michigan law, properties with unpaid 2017 taxes were subject to foreclosure by county treasurers on March 31, 2020. The Order moves the March 31 deadline to May 29, 2020, or 30 days after the state of emergency ends, whichever is later. The Order takes effect immediately.
The extraordinary measure helps families struggling financially because of the COVID-19 national emergency. “People are worried,” said Barb Parrett, Menominee County Treasurer. “This Order will give those facing the burden of tax foreclosure some needed emergency relief to assure their homes are not taken from them, and so they can focus on the safety and health of their families. Here in the County Treasurer’s office, a top priority has always been preventing tax foreclosure, and helping families stay in their homes. Anyone still facing tax foreclosure under the new May 29, 2020 deadline is encouraged to contact our office. I want to extend sincere thanks to the MACT legislative team, Michigan Treasury, and Governor Gretchen Whitmer for working to make this happen.”
The Menominee County Courthouse is closed to the public until April 13, 2020, or unless otherwise directed. Delinquent property tax payments can continue to be made by mail; or with a debit or credit card online at www.menomineecounty.com, or by calling 906-863-5548. There is also a payment drop box located inside the Courthouse vestibule.
