On June 16, 2006, then-Governor Jennifer Granholm signed into law Public Act 187 amending Public Act 207, the Fire Prevention Code. This law, which went into effect immediately, requires a minimum of two (2) drills per year in which occupants of schools are restricted to the interior of the building and the building is secured using security measures appropriate in the event of an emergency such as a release of a hazardous material or the presence of an armed individual on or near the premises.
Guidance for schools to write and update their emergency plans is available from the Michigan Education Association, Michigan State Police Emergency Management / Homeland Security Division or from your local Emergency Management Coordinator.
